Meet Mia!!

Tell us about yourself?
I am a 26 year old who loves LIFE and all of its possibilities. Everyday is a new beginning for me. I am an avid reader and runner. Favorite book is "Sun Stand Still" by Steven Furtick. Its a must read if you're believing God for the impossible. Lately I have been obsessed with my health. I was so so frustrated with not having enough energy to sustain me throughout the day so I've changed my diet and fitness routine. I juice fruits and veggies in the morning and sometimes at night. And I must say that I dont need a nap anymore afterwork. :) I can go through a whole day w/o a nap. GO ME!

How long have you been natural?
5 years Natural

How long did you transition before doing the big chop?
I never did the "big chop". I just grew it out and kept trimming the ends. I would do flat twists and roller sets while I was going through the process.

What were some of your struggles on your natural hair journey?

Two frustrations: I have hair color in the front of my hair and this part stays super straight. BUT when you flat twist it or put it in bantu knots, it is always the prettiest pieces.
My hair has trouble retaining moisture as well so lately I've been doing all day hot oil and deep conditioner treatments to help it retain it's moisture.

Have you ever felt like you wanted to relax your hair again? If so what changed your mind?

Yes, I have felt that I wanted to relax my hair again. I felt it would be easier to maintain. What stopped me from relaxing, is when I thought about how long my transition was.

What are some of your favorite products? Or the products that you just can't live without?

My favorite products are: Jojoba Oil, Almond Oil, Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding (I love the smell, i mix it with Jojoba oil & its perfect for moisturizing my hair), Shea Moisture Deep Conditioning Treatment (I use this as a styling aid instead of deep conditioner), Miss Jessie's Super Sudsy Shampoo, Miss Jessie's Super Sweet Sweatback Treatment and Amla Oil (has a very strong smell, never use when going on a date, YIKES)

What would you say your hair type is?

I have a combination of 3c in the back, and 4c in the front because of the color and flat ironing. And I lie to you not!

What do you do to retain length/ maintain the health of your hair?

To retain length, I take BIOTIN vitamins! And I only trim it maybe every 3 months or so. To maintain the health of my hair, I always deep condition with Mrs. Jessie's Super Sweet Sweatback Teatment after washes along with doing an all day hot oil treatment for the scalp, ends, and color. I normally do this on a Saturday. I place a shower cap on it and leave it all day. Afterwards, I normally wash it out but I like to leave a lot of the oil in it. When it is in its dry state, I ususaly put alot of oil on the color. I recently re-found an oil that I ADORED in college, 14-K Gold Oil by CB Smooth. I rubbing this liberally all over my hair and scalp. LOVE IT!

What is your regimen on wash days and nightly regimen?

On wash days, I have to prepare my self mentally for the all day gamut of hair doing. Then i'll shampoo with Miss Jessie's Super Sudsy Shampoo. I condition with Super Sweet Sweatback Treatment and I mix my hot oils (Jojoba, Almond, Olive Oil, sometimes Amla Indian Oil) I sit under the dryer for at least 30 minutes, then i just walk around all day with a shower cap on (I would say at least 4 hours). When I place the conditioner and hot oils on my hair, I usually seperate my hair into sections so the conditioner can penetrate the scalp and hair. I have really really thick hair. Then I come back and rinse it. Lately I'm obsessed with perfecting my bantu knots so I'll do about 20-25 bantu knots. They are pretty small in the front because my hair is shorter in the front than the back.
Nightly, I really don't do anything. I just put a scarf on my edges and pull it into a high pony tail. That's it!

What advice would you give to fellow curly chicks that are on their natural hair journey?

Advice: Be patient. You're gonna love the end results. Always keep a trim, at least every 3 months or so. And remember its "just hair". It'll grow back if you cut it or die it or it doesnt do what you want it to do. "Its just hair".

I'm Mia B, signing off. PEACE & BLESSINGS to you on your natural hair journey.
